Oppo Reno 5 Pro (5G): A powerful mid-tier smartphone at an affordable price.

Phone / Tablet

Earlier, Oppo has released their latest flagship for their Reno Series, the Reno 5 Pro (5G). With a price tag of $899.00, although it is not the cheapest mid-tier smartphone in the market, the price is considered affordable and justifiable. Here's what it has to offer.

Camera

The Reno 5 Pro (5G) holds a Quad camera on its rear, consisting of a 64MP main, 8MP Ultra-wide-angle, 2MP macro, and a 2MP mono lens. While on the front of the camera sits a 32MP punch-hole selfie camera.

Photography Quality

Main Camera The primary camera works well in capturing detailed shots with great exposure to the object. Even with the AI enhancement option, the image became more vibrant without looking over-processed, which can help users take candid photos without editing or adjusting further.

Night mode The primary camera is capable of taking a clear night shot with the proper exposure. A little editing will help in enhancing the overall image if required. However, the night mode may not be ideal unless you are going for a night flare shot. As the signature board with lightings or images may get overexpose and lose details.

Videography Features

One highlight among what Reno 5 Pro (5G) had to offer is the AI that drives a significant improvement in camera performance, such as the (FDF) portrait video system and dual-view recording.

Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video System

The FDF Portrait video system integrates powerful hardware with intelligent algorithms and processing technology, which creates a better video recording experience. It can capture clear shots at night, reduce overexposure in heavily backlit scenes, eliminate blurriness, and stabilize motion videos. This can be especially useful for vloggers or content creators looking to develop their short video content as and when they are.

AI Highlight Video

Recording (AI OFF)

Recording (AI ON)

Indoor The indoor video had a seemingly brightly lit setup with harsh spotlights around. Hence, recording can be tricky with either too much shadow casting or overexposure at certain angles. In the video, the Reno 5 Pro captures a good amount of lighting with great focus on the subject. The Ai Highlight video shows the ability to increase the brightness without overexposing the highlights and filling in the shadow's darker parts with a subtle increase of light.

Recording (AI ON)

Outdoor The outdoor video(with AI) shows how well it can suppress harsh lighting and maintain a good amount of lighting exposure when moving from a close to far distant recording. It has a consistent vibrant blue and a better-tuned lighting exposure than the standard recording.

Performance

Powering the Reno 5 Pro (5G) is the 7nm MediaTek 1000+ dimensity chipset, along with a 12GB Ram and a 256GB storage space. According to the Nanoreview benchmark, the MediaTek 1000+ performs better in both CPU and Gaming performance against its sibling Reno 5 (5G), which runs on a Snapdragon 765G. It has a 90Hz high refresh rate with an option to reduce to 60Hz and a touch sampling rate of 180Hz max, contributing to speeding up the overall interface experience.

Smooth Gaming Experience

Handling popular games like PUBG is not much of a worry. The overall game experience is smooth and did not heat up even after a run of 2 hours in PUBG with a high frame rate and HD setting. On top of that, users also get to tune out interruptions such as incoming calls, notifications or alarms, etc., during gamer mode.

Display

The Oppo Reno 5 Pro (5G) features a 6.5-inch AMOLED panel (2400x 1080) FHD+ and is a 3D borderless sense screen with curved edges. It has a 402 PPI pixel density, 500 nits brightness that can increase to 800 nits under sunlight, and a local peak brightness of 1100 nits, which is great for any lighting condition. Both the front and back display uses the Corning Gorilla Glass 5, protecting the smartphone from scratches and surviving typical drops or up to 1.2 meters.

Available in two colors, the Reno 5 Pro (5G) comes in a beautiful galactic silver and starry black. The model received on our end is the Galactic Silver, which shows different pastel colors at different angles, and it has a shining effect known as the Reno Glow. Weighing appx 173gm, it feels pretty light to use and carry around the whole day too. The package includes a charger with cable, earpiece, and a free transparent plastic casing for extra protection.

Large Battery Capacity (With fast charge)

Despite being approximately 7.6mm thick, the Reno 5 Pro (5G) holds a large battery size of 4350mAh (2*2175mAh(Typ)) that can last from morning till night and still have approximately one-third of battery life remaining. It also supports a 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 that charges a completely drained battery to 35% in 10 mins and 100% in just 40mins. For intensive media usage, the Reno 5 Pro (5G) also can last throughout the day. This usage includes 3 hr of 1080p quality youtube, a timelapse recording of 2 hr, a 3 hr of Spotify music, and a 2 hr of PUBG gaming in a high frame rate HD quality.

Overall

All in all, the Reno 5 Pro (5G) may cost slightly more than others but is justifiable. It has a quad-camera and offers strong AI capabilities, enhancing the camera system to process good photo quality and video recording that is excellent for vlogging purposes. It also can handle popular mobile gaming with the dimensity 1000+ chipset, has a large battery capacity with fast charge, and a 90Hz large display screen.
