Apple's AirTag: Everything you need to know about Apple's AirTag

Apple

Adding on to Apple's ecosystem is the small and impressive AirTag, introduced during the Apple Spring Loaded event. It is available for purchase now with a starting price of $45.00 for one pack and $149.00 for four packs. And here's everything you need to know about it.

About AirTag

Design in a small circular shape, the AirTag has 31.9mm in diameter, 8mm thickness, only 11 grams, is IP67 water and dust resistant, and can last more than a year on a standard replaceable battery. Despite being that small, this AirTag is designed to conveniently keep track and help iPhone owners find their missing items, such as keys or backpacks. It has free engraving and can be personalized with either your initials, an emoji, or both when purchasing from the apple store or website.

How AirTag works?

How does it work? AirTag can send out a secure Bluetooth signal that allows nearby devices to detect it and send the location to the iCloud, which will appear on the map of the Find My app. According to Apple, this whole process is anoynymous and encrypted to protect the user's privacy.

How to locate it? The AirTag has a built-in speaker that produces a chirping sound for the user to locate it conveniently. This sound can be activated when the user taps the play sound button on their iPhone. And if you happen to lose the item outdoor, luckily, there is a lost mode feature. All you have to do is enable the Lost mode in your iPhone, and a notification will be sent automatically on the last seen area.

Precision Finding Alternatively, if you lost an item with your AirTag attached to it, you can use this feature known as Precision Finding. When within range, the iPhone will use its built-in U1 chips to determine the precise direction and distance down to the tens of centimeters away from the AirTag. However, this feature is only compatible with iPhone 11 series and iPhone 12 series.

Setting up an AirTag

How to set it up? Setting up an AirTag is easy. Place the AirTag near the iPhone and wait for a connection prompt to appear. You can then connect and name the AirTag accordingly to your preference, and it's good to go! However, it is good to note that there is an ownership limit of up to 16 AirTags, which is more than enough if you were to ask me.

Privacy and Security

Unwanted Tracking Prevention With all that said, privacy is a big concern to many, which Apple had work to develop a system that is considered safe, and this includes unwanted tracking prevention. Meaning, if an unknown AirTag that is away from its owner is on you, a notification will be prompted to your iPhone when you reach home, which will raise your awareness of it. However, if you are an Android user, you will not get any notification. But the unknown AirTag separated from the owner will start beeping when the attached item or person is on the move, raising attention to it too.

Rotating Identifier Also, Apple has this rotating identifier, whereby each AirTag Bluetooth identifier is "frequently" cycled, which ensures the user not to be tracked from place to place.
